This purpose of this web log is to showcase some of the people, equipment, events and times of the 14th Tactical Fighter Squadron, an F-16 Viper fighter squadron that proudly served in the Far East at the twilight of the Cold War.
The 14TFS served during the Cold War, from its activation 1 January 1987 into 1991, when the squadron was redesignated as the 14th Fighter Squadron, followed shortly afterward by the collapse of the Soviet Union. Others may chronicle the 14th Fighter Squadron’s many activities since 1991, but the focus of the Cold War Samurai is that TFS period of time.
This web log is therefore dedicated to the men and women who served in, with, and around the 432d Tactical Fighter Wing at Misawa Air Base, Japan, and especially to those members of the wing who were in the 14th Tactical Fighter Squadron, the Samurai.
It is also dedicated to the men and women of the Japan Air Self Defense Force’s (JASDF) Northern Air Defense Force and the citizens of Misawa, Japan, and surrounding communities with whom we shared the land, skies and seas around northern Japan. Most of us, if not all, would agree you are the best hosts to work and/or associate with anywhere! Honto ne, Domo Arigatou Gozaimashita!
And to those lands and peoples the 14TFS had occasion to visit and train in, a hearty thanks, from Korea to the Philippines, Thailand, Australia and more, you are all great! The tapestry of freedom’s airpower in the Far East is surely richer and better as a result of our teamwork and cooperation.
And, lest we forget, a hat tip to our erstwhile opponents at the bases around the then Soviet Far East, whether you belonged to Frontal Aviation, Aviation of Air Defense, Long Range Aviation or the Pacific Ocean Fleet Air Force. We never had to test our skill sets against yours, which in a way is a good thing because we would have smoked your empennages! Check 6!
Last, but not least, a hand salute to the Airmen of today’s 14th Fighter Squadron! You have an outstanding heritage in which you can take great pride as you fly and fight to win – make us all proud!
